Gua Bao, also known as steamed buns or Taiwanese hamburgers, are perfect for an Asian-themed food party. This easy recipe yields around 8 soft, fluffy buns, ideal for holding various fillings.
1. Cut parchment paper into small squares, the size of the Bao buns.
2. In a stand mixer's bowl, mix milk, water, sugar, and yeast. Then add flour, baking powder, and vegetable oil.
3. On the lowest speed, work the dough for 5 minutes.
4. Add the salt and continue to work the dough for another 4 minutes.
5. Round the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Let it rest until it doubles in size.
6. On a lightly floured surface, open the dough with a rolling pin to about a half centimeter thickness. Lightly brush the dough with vegetable oil.
7. Using a cup or a small bowl, cut the dough into small circular shapes.
8. Fold each circular piece on itself and roll softly with the rolling pin to create the signature bao shape.
9. Place the shaped Baos in a bamboo steamer and let them proof for about 30 minutes.
10. Steam the Baos over boiling water for 12-14 minutes.
11. Fill them up immediately with desired fillings such as pulled pork, cucumbers, scallions, radishes, sesame, chilli, coriander, and aioli.
